Snow, deodar forest and a warm hotel in the evening — a Letszu group trip into Kumrat Valley in deep winter.
Kumrat in winter is a different valley entirely. The deodar forest stands in snow, the river runs low and clear between white banks, and the crowds that fill the meadows in July are nowhere to be seen.
Our group made the run up through Upper Dir with clear blue skies and snow on the ground — the combination every winter traveller hopes for and few actually get. The days were spent in the forest and along the riverbed; the evenings at the Sylvan Hotel in Kumrat with heating, hot food and everyone comparing photographs.
Winter access to Kumrat depends entirely on the road, and the road depends entirely on the last snowfall. We monitor it constantly and only run the trip when it is genuinely safe — which is why our winter departures move around rather than sitting on a fixed calendar.
If a snowbound valley with almost nobody in it sounds like your kind of trip, talk to us early in the season.
